Art

Autumn 1 Feedback

We started our session today by joining up with a child from a different key stage and sharing our sketchbooks and explaining what we have been learning about and what our favourite piece of work was. Children were able to articulate their learning and their love of art.

We then had a discussion about what has gone well in our art units and what we would like to get better.

WWW

  • Using lots of different equipment and media to draw.
  • Having more time to focus on our drawing skills
  • Getting to practice shading techniques throughout our unit
  • Finding out about interesting artists
  • Having more choice and freedom in what we did

EBI

  • Having more opportunities to paint
  • Getting to work in different styles

We ended the session by having a discussion about our key vocabulary and artists. All year groups could share the name of at least one artist that they have looked at this year. Children were able to share key vocabulary and attempted to explain this. There was a clear progression throughout school on children’s level of vocabulary. Year 5 and 6 were able to name and discuss the formal elements that linked to their units.

Autumn 2 Feedback

Children shared what they have learnt in art this year. They were able to explain what they did and used their sketchbooks to discuss their artists and share some of the skills that they developed. Children loved getting to show off their favourite pieces of artwork!

WWW:

Y1 – We love getting to work with paint to create different pieces of art. We also love getting to draw.

Y2 – We loved getting to print and it makes us want to do more printing. We also love getting to work with lots of different colours.

Y3 – We love getting to do draw with different media including charcoal and pens. We like sketching lots of different things, and the printing is interesting because we get to see how our prints create an image over and over again. We love getting to be creative.

Y4 – We like getting to sketch with different colours. Our sketches in pastels look really vibrant and we like how it brightens our pictures.

Y5 – We like getting to work with different aspects of art such as making a sculpture. I loved that our sculptures were unique and different. We love how we learn about multiple artists so that we can compare their artwork. We love getting to work with different gradients of pencils because it let us use more tone in our sketches. This shading lets us work in more colours. We also liked getting to retrieve our skills in retrieval sessions.

Y6 – We like learning about the different artists so we can find out about them and their styles. This means they can inspire our artwork. We like getting to work with different media like pastels because then we can smudge them for detail. We like learning about the shading so that we can make things more realistic.

EBI:

  • Working with different sculpture materials (wood)
  • Developing shading skills in different media
  • Using water colour pencils more
  • More time to draw (including with more colours)
  • Finding out more about artist’s lives
  • Working on a bigger scale

Spring 1 Feedback

We focused on four key questions. These were the children’s responses:

My favourite thing about Art at All Saints’ is . . .

  • Y1 – It is nice and fun, making portraits is interesting and getting to use different coloured pastels is the best.
  • Y2 – Getting chances to draw and being able to use paint.
  • Y3 – Having the chance to evaluate our work because it helps us make it better.
  • Y4 – Being able to have the chance to develop our creativity, especially sketching and drawing.
  • Y5 – Getting to use a lot of different media when we are working. Being able to evaluate the work of different artists.
  • Y6 – Creating and painting things inspired by other artists and making sculptures previously. Digital art was a challenge but fun to do.

I know when I am doing well in Art because . . .

  • Y1 – Teachers give us a pink tick or we get shines.
  • Y2 – We can see our own work is going well.
  • Y3 – We have the time to practice and develop skills.
  • Y4 – I try.
  • Y5 – When our teacher shows our work to the class and getting verbal praise.
  • Y6 – Our teacher praises us or we go to show our work to other teachers. We also get shines.

In Art, I have learnt . . .

  • Y1 – We have learnt about Picasso and Andy Goldsworthy. We have done lots of drawing and have made natural sculptures.
  • Y2 – We have learnt about figure drawing and how to paint neatly. We also learnt about Henri Matisse.
  • Y3 – We have learnt about Kate Osborne and Robert Hooke. We have learnt 6 new shading techniques to use when we are drawing insects.
  • Y4 – We have learnt how to shade and sketch nicely. We have been learning about Claude Monet.
  • Y5 – We have been learning about colour blending using oil pastels, coloured pencils and soft pastels. We learnt about the artist Georgia O’Keeffe
  • Y6 – We have learnt how to blend and add detail. We have looked at using colour and shape together. We have learnt about Kandinsky and how he uses colour.

Art would be even better if . . .

  • Y1 – Getting to do more and using more paint.
  • Y2 – Using more paint because we want to mix the colours to make lighter and darker shades. Getting to do more art.
  • Y3 – More water colours to be shared out.
  • Y4 – Having more choice.
  • Y5 – More chance to share evaluations.
  • Y6 – Looking at more artists so we can make informed choices for our own artwork. We also want a full day of art.
